Scope and Contents

Description:The first mention of an Archives for the American Province of the Poor Handmaids is in November 1967 issue of "The Trellis" newsletter. Sr. Mildred (Augustin) was collecting material for an Archives room on the fourth floor of the North Wing of the Motherhouse. The next mention of a Province Archives is a Provincial Council decision in July1974 to preserve the Province's historic documents. A room in the basement of the Motherhouse selected for this purpose was readied by January 1975. Sr. Mary Roselda Filley began work on collecting and organizing the archives in a room on the second floor of the Motherhouse in the summer of 1976. In 1987 the bulk of the collection was transferred to the Archives of the University of Notre Dame. The Province Archives continues to function as a collecting point for PHJC documents.

Material from the PHJC Province Archives include archives policy manuals, old finding aids and indices, correspondence, information on the archives of other religious communities, and collected materials and archivist's notes for specific research projects.
