General
Chapter. Gives a brief background on Clement Von August Galen, the Bishop of Muenster, who as Gordon discusses at length, gave many powerful sermons that were "direct challenges to the Nazi terror-state". However, Gordon goes on to say that these sermons were as far as Galen went. Gordon says that in many of his sermons he said that Catholics, despite the evils of the regime, should still follow the Vaterland. Thus, as Gordon concludes, the wartime writings of the most revered opponent to the regime actually contributed to German Catholic conformity to the Nazi Cause. ~ New York
