General

Document. Memo from Alice, letter from Fr. Frederick, and a book review written by Gprdon Zahn ~ Fr. Frederick (3/24) asks Gordon to prepare a statement for publication about the moral and ethical implications of conscription. Alice writes to Gordon (4/22/80) thanking him for his willingness to participate, outlining the publication plan, and giving the deadline. Gordon's statement "Comments on The Moral and Ethical Implicaitons of Conscription and National Service" is attached. Gordon asserts that conscription increases the likelihood for war and argues that conventional war is morally wrong and can never be just. He points out that conscription depersonalizes individuals and forces them into a situation of war. He also says that forced servitude is forbidden under the Constitution, and that individuals who are forced into the military will not be able to develop their moral judgement.
