Scope and Contents
Records of the provincial administration of Fr. Zahm, who served as head of the Indiana Province from January 1898 to August 1906; also Fr. Zahm's papers dating from before and after his terms as provincial. Correspondence (1892-1919), chiefly with Gilbert Francais, superior general of the congregation, concerning administration of the congregation in the U.S. (where Zahm was provinicial) and its persecution and legal dissolution in France (1901-1903); manuscripts of Zahm's writings, chiefly of his book Evolution and Dogma (1896) and diaries, mainly of his early life (1869 and undated). Includes correspondence with Theodore Roosevelt and his private secretary, Frank Harper, concerning Zahm's friendship with Roosevelt and expedition to South America with him (1904-1917). Other church correspondents include Archbishop John Ireland (1893-1917), Archbishop John Keane (1893-1905), and Rev. John Power; also correspondence with the Sisters of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, concerning the founding St. Margaret's Hospital (Spring Valley, Illinois) and establishing the Order in the U.S. (1903-1905).
